Massachusetts House Preparing To Vote On Sports Betting Thursday

Looking for the legal sports betting age at land-based sportsbooks isn’t hard to find as most locations require players to be at least 21 years old or older. Unlike with online and mobile sports betting operations, all legal land-based sportsbooks are regulated operations and are run through the state. A lot of states sports betting age requirement is 21 and retail sportsbooks fully follow these regulations.

These states have already passed laws to legalize sports betting, but regulators are still in the process of approving operators or setting up final rules for the legal market. The state passed legislation in early 2020 to permit sports gambling at tribal casinos in-state. The Tennessee state legislature approved a sports betting bill in the spring of 2019 that will only allow betting online and on mobile apps. The state expects to launch its gambling operations no later than November 1, 2020. New York actually passed a bill in 2013 that made sports gambling legal at the state level, but the state didn’t open its first official sportsbook until July of 2019.

The MD sports betting industry is expected to launch sometime in 2021. North Carolina approved of sports betting in July 2019 and officially launched on March 18, 2021. There are currently just two retail sportsbooks in North Carolina – both Harrah’s properties in Murphy and Cherokee.

Sports betting lines are the probability odds assigned to a sporting contest. Various types of lines include the point spread, moneyline, and the over/under number for total points. Negative lines indicate the favored team, and positive numbers are assigned to the underdog. For now, mobile and online sports betting isn’t an option in New York. Sports betting apps can launch in the state after lawmakers draft new laws to expand the reach of current legislation. The recent vote didn’t include either online sportsbooks or sports betting apps, and lawmakers may only discuss it after finalizing legal sports betting. The DC Lottery has been designated to oversee these mobile betting apps. The target date to get things up and running with legal online sports betting is by the end of 2019. Today, gamblers in West Virginia have a selection of sports betting apps to explore.

Though it has a smaller in population and has no professional sports teams, it could still be among the more lucrative per capita markets in the country. More importantly, Illinois bettors are required to register at a retail sportsbook before betting with an online option. The state launched betting on March 9, 2020, (just ahead of an NCAA Tournament that didn’t wind up happening) and launched online betting in June 2020. At least 30 states, including neighboring Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire and New York, have authorized gamblers to place legal bets on sports. Massachusetts is one of the last states in New England without sports betting.
