After a years-long battle, no state is prouder to offer legal sports betting than New Jersey. The state has legalized sports betting at local racetracks and all of its Atlantic City casinos as of June 2018. Of all the legal sports betting states, New Jersey has the most competitive market outside of Nevada.

On Sept. 27, 2018 the House Judiciary Committee held a formal hearing on the topic. Still, King said while 2021 would definitely be a seminal year in the sports gambling industry, he cautioned that bills often take three years to pass from the time they’re introduced. Supporters of legalizing sports betting are vocal about it and outright opposition to the idea is much more rare.

We highly recommend waiting for your state to introduce legal and regulated online sports betting before you place real money wagers. While it’s technically not illegal for US citizens to make bets with unregulated offshore casinos, there are many risks associated with doing so. The Office of Lottery and Gaming provides regulatory oversight of all sports wagering in D.C. Legal sports betting in Michigan commenced on March 11, 2020, with two Detroit-area casinos launching on the same day.

These states have not had any publicly-announced bills devoted to sports betting legalization. On the last day of the state’s 2019 legislative session — June Maine lawmakers passed “An Act to Ensure Proper Oversight of Sports Betting in the State.” Shortly thereafter, the governor vetoed the bill. All of these states have seen some degree of legislative activity towards the legalization of sports betting the past few years. States have two paths toward legalization — a statewide referendum, which typically occurs as a November vote, or a law passed by the state legislature.

As of January 2021, online and mobile users can register on a sportsbook app from anywhere in the state since the in-person requirement ended on Dec. 31, 2020. DraftKings, PointsBet and Caesars are among the operators that are live in Iowa. State laws as written are currently against gambling, save for horse racing. The state doesn’t allow fantasy sports, either and there’s been little political appetite for legal sports betting. Lawmakers surprisingly approved statewide mobile wagering, becoming just the second state to allow online betting without any retail sportsbooks. The first two online sportsbooks took bets beginning Sept. 1, 2021.
