After a years-long battle, no state is prouder to offer legal sports betting than New Jersey. The state has legalized sports betting at local racetracks and all of its Atlantic City casinos as of June 2018. New Jersey sportsbooks are the most comprehensive betting products available on the East Coast, with land-based, online, and mobile betting options. Of all the legal sports betting states, New Jersey has the most competitive market outside of Nevada.
Senators Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and now-retired Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, co-introduced comprehensive sports betting legislation at the end of 2018. Still, King said while 2021 would definitely be a seminal year in the sports gambling industry, he cautioned that bills often take three years to pass from the time they’re introduced. The state doesn’t allow fantasy sports, either and there’s been little political appetite for legal sports betting. Lawmakers surprisingly approved statewide mobile wagering, becoming just the second state to allow online betting without any retail sportsbooks. The first two online sportsbooks took bets beginning Sept. 1, 2021.
